Picture of the day: Frozen Florence Fountain

I took this picture last week,  right outside my hotel in Florence, in Piazza Santo Spirito. Adorned with icicles, the fountain is still working, and the pigeons come there for a morning drink.

Paris in a week

Well, yes.  In exactly one week from today, we'll be heading towards Paris, where we'll stay for the rest of this winter, and hopefully experience some spring too!
Work is more less taken care of,  we've arranged for a cat- and house sitter , we've found schools for all four children, and, most importantly, a place to live; a little apartment where the 6 of us will learn how to manage with less space around us.  That part is scary, but then again, it might be good.  After all, most people in the world live far more crowded than the average Norwegian family, and that's not necessarily a bad thing.  Increasingly smaller families in increasingly bigger houses - that has been the trend in our corner of the world. This might actually be very cozy and snug, and, we're after all on the Montmartre hill, a neighborhood with nice parks, playgrounds, cafés, shops and lots of stairs and steep, crawling streets. I'm looking forward to these weeks!

Picture of the day: Madonna della Seggiola by Raffaello

I saw this painting last week in Florence. It's displayed in Palazzo Pitti, in the Galeria Palatina. Rafaello painted this around 1513-1514, and it is famous because it's so different in style from the more typical Madonna-paintings he made.  The virgin is seated in a chair, thus the name of the painting, and she is dressed like a contemporain country girl. She holds baby Jesus, while John the Baptist is humbly watching her, while showing his devotion.

Picture of the day: Winter morning by the Arno

Last week I spent  a few days in Florence, Italy. This picture is taken early in the morning, as I walk along the Arno river. The old bridge: Ponte Vecchio, and the streets surrounding, are almost deserted, something that is extremely unusual, but surely due to the cold February weather.

Picture of the day: Snow covered lake

This photo is taken almost exactly one year ago.  In february 2011 the lake had a solid layer of ice, and on top of that there was a lot of snow.  Here is my daughter and my niece going for a walk on the shoveled pathway - on the lake! This year this hasn't been possible, because temperatures have been too high , and there is not enough ice.

Picture of the day: Montmartre

This street (Rue de l'Abreuvoir)  is one of the typical, old, winding streets on Montmartre, and it's only  a few minutes' walk from where I'll be staying this winter/spring. This is actually going to be my neighborhood for a while, and I had no idea when I took the picture, more than two years ago.

Picture of the day: Paris Breakfast

I snapped this picture about a year ago, when I spent a weekend by my self in Paris, preparing for my guided tours. Breakfast outside (in February!), in front of the Sorbonne University, where I was once a student.
Cappuccino, orange juice, croissant and a piece of baguette with strawberry jam, that's what I call breakfast!
